Robert Varkonyi

Robert Varkonyi may turn out to be one of the biggest one-and-done stories in poker history.

But if you’re going to pick one event to win, the World Series of Poker is a good choice. Varkonyi won the main event at the 2002 WSOP, taking advantage of some bad beats and cutting Phil Hellmuth’s hair in the process.

Varkonyi clearly brought some intelligence to the WSOP table, having graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983, and carved out a career as an investment banker in Brooklyn.

But Varkonyi was brushed off as dead money. On Day 3 of the tournament, Varkonyi held suited Q-10 to Hellmuth’s suited A-K, went all in, and knocked the 1989 champion out of the tournament.

It got worse for Hellmuth.

Acting as a commentator for ESPN, Hellmuth said that he’d shave his head for charity if Varkonyi won the tournament. Which is exactly what happened, once again on a Q-10 (off-suited this time).

“Shave Phil’s head!” the crowd chanted. And so it came to pass.

Varkonyi hasn’t added to his $2-million purse, but he does write poker columns. He lives in Great Neck, N.Y. with his wife and daughter.
